Asia>Philippines>502. Bitukling Nativity

This Nativity was hand-carved from bitukling wood by Arman Cagayat in the Philippines. The set contains nine figures: Joseph holding a straw hat, Mary holding baby Jesus, a stable, a palm tree, a boy who is waving, a carabao or water buffalo, and three wise men who bring gifts of mangoes, bananas and a sack of rice. The kneeling Joseph figure measures 4 inches tall. The stable hut measures 11 inches tall.

Arman lives in very humble circumstances with his wife and three small children. He is able to provide for his family by selling this Nativity scene and other woodcarvings.
