OUR COLLECTION — AFRICA — ETHIOPIA 99. WOOD NATIVITY WALL HANGING
This hanging Nativity was carved from eucalyptus wood by local women in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The women sell these items in a local market to support themselves and their families. The scene depicts three wise men traveling down a road to meet the shepherds who have gathered with their sheep outside the tukul where Jesus has just been born. A tukul is a round Ethiopian hut made of a wooden frame and then covered with mud, hay, and manure to form the walls, and finally covered with more mud. The item measures 7.5 inches tall (not including hanging string) by 6.5 inches wide by 1/8 inch thick.
All profits from our sale of Ethiopian Nativity sets go to a nonprofit Ethiopian charity called Children of Ethiopia Education Fund. Their web site is www.coeef.org. This charity provides funds so that girls can attend school in Ethiopia who would otherwise not be able to attend because of the fees required. The charity was started in 2001 with the sponsoring of one girl; the program has grown tremendously so that in 2006 over 700 girls were sponsored.
