NATIVITIES FOR SALE — CARDS — MALAWI CHITENJE CARDS
These handmade cards are made by Josephy Banda in Blantyre, Malawi. The coarse paper used in each card is handmade and then decorated with Nativity designs cut from Chitenje cloth. Chitenje is a type of textile women use to cover themselves with. It symbolizes modesty. Men often take the Chitenje to a tailor to make shirts or a safari suit. In other countries like Zambia, the textile is called Chitenge. Josephy used banana leaf fiber for the brown faces of each figure.
Each package of 4 cards includes one of each style shown in the example photo. The cloth used on each card is unique. Each card includes an envelope. The cards measure approximately 5.75 inches by 4 inches.
We are so pleased to learn that Josephy was able to upgrade the roof on his home from grass to metal because we purchased a shipment of Nativity cards from him. Wonderful! This is a great blessing for his family.
