OUR COLLECTION — LATIN AMERICA — PERU 412. AMAZON TRIBAL NATIVITY
This hand-painted clay Nativity was made by Alberto Aparicio Canchari in Ayacucho, Peru. The scene includes the Holy Family, a cow, a donkey, and three wise men with unique gifts. The people all wear the traditional costumes and facial artistry that is unique to the Asháninka people of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. The tallest figure measures 5.5 inches high.
The Asháninka are mostly dependent on subsistence agriculture. They use the slash-and-burn method to clear lands for planting crops. They live from hunting and fishing, primarily using bows and arrows or spears, as well as from collecting fruit and vegetables in the jungle. Alberto draws attention to the Asháninka plight with this Nativity, for they are being displaced from their homeland by loggers.
