OUR COLLECTION — ASIA — ARMENIA 457. WOOD NATIVITY WITH STABLE
This Nativity is handmade in Armenia. It is hand-carved from six different species of wood, including beech, mahogany, mulberry, pear, apricot, and walnut woods. It is assembled from 11 hand-carved figures and a stable attached to a tiered platform. It measures 9.75 inches wide by 7.5 inches high.
The scene was made by Sasoon, a multi talented artist, is a graduate of several art schools, and master of many artistic trades including painting, pottery making, wood carving, and bronze & metal works. He often makes upscale figurines from bronze and stone, but his more recent focus has been on woodworking since the completion of his army service. His humble disposition coexists with his boundless workmanship. He is presently working toward fulfilling a promise to himself to earn membership in the National Painter’s Union.
