OUR COLLECTION — AFRICA — BURKINA FASO 122. PAINTED WOOD NATIVITY
This hand-painted Nativity is from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Included in this painted wood set are 14 pieces. The tallest (the camel and rider) is approximately 5 inches tall. The other standing figures are approximately 3 to 4 inches tall. The wise man is riding a camel, but the animal does look like an ostrich.
The artist of the Nativity set is Anik Traore. He is from the Jula people group in Northern Ivory Coast. His original nationality may be Burkinabé. A few years ago there was some fighting in the Ivory Coast and a lot of Burkinabé fled back to Burkina. This is the case for Anik.
Anik makes these Nativity sets and sells them through a store in Ouagadougou called Nuances. This store sells handicrafts from all over Africa.
