OUR COLLECTION — ASIA — CHINA 200. LARGE WALL NATIVITY
This large wall Nativity was carved for us by our dear friend Mr. Zhang. He is a Chinese Christian and master woodcarver in China. We feel very honored that he would invest so much time in creating this work of art for us, especially considering his advanced years and poor health. This scene is carved from aromatic camphor wood. It measures 36 inches long by 22 inches tall.
The scene depicts the stable in the left foreground with the Holy Family, shepherds, and 16 sheep to the right of the stable. Two winged angels fly on clouds in the center of the scene, one pointing toward the Holy Family below. Three wise men on camels approach a bridge over a river in the upper right corner. The scene contains many varieties of trees and plants found in China, such as the bamboo tree with long slender leaves in the upper-left corner. The bamboo tree in the scene would be a mature plant because bamboo only flowers after years of growth.
This item comes from the only Christian woodcarving workshop in China, located in China’s Zhejiang province, an area famous for all types of wood carving.
