OUR COLLECTION — AFRICA — DR CONGO 352. CYPRESS NATIVITY
This Nativity scene is hand-carved from cypress wood in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The set was made in mountainous Eastern Congo, in Kyondo village, by Jean Marie Kamavu. He is also involved in forest protection by replanting the trees used for carving the figurines. The set contains the Holy Family, two shepherds (one is playing a flute), a cow, a donkey, a sheep, and three wise men. The tallest standing figure is 6 inches tall.
The purchase of this Nativity benefits an organization called Ipsaci Corp., which is determined to change the living conditions of hospitalized women in Butembo, DR Congo who have been gang-raped. The makeshift hospital center that cares for these assaulted women is merely a filthy tent where two beds are pushed together to accommodate three victims. Ipsaci’s goal is to buy sufficient beds for these victims and build an appropriate care center to handle the 60 cases per month of abused women.
