OUR COLLECTION — LATIN AMERICA — ECUADOR 555. WOVEN NATIVITY
This vintage Nativity from Ecuador is hand-woven from toquilla straw that comes from a palm-like plant that grows among the Andes Mountains. Toquilla straw is used in weaving Panama hats, which originated along the coast of Ecuador during the 1600s. The scene includes 13 figures: Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus in manger bed, shepherd man and woman, awesome purple sheep, beige sheep, three small angels, and three wise men. The wise men have stars embroidered onto their capes. Joseph measures 6 inches tall.
Paper tags stating “Made in Ecuador” are stapled to many of the figures. The colors used to dye the straw appear to come from different fruits or plants.
