OUR COLLECTION — AFRICA — GHANA 481. EWE HOLY FAMILY
This Holy Family is carved from Sese wood by the Ewe ethnic group in Ghana. The distinctive carving style of this people is seen in the figures’ long bodies and necks and their enlarged heads. The Dada (“mother” in the Ewe language) wears a slete (long skirt) and kaba (bodice). Baby Jesus rides on Dada’s back, wrapped in a shawl. The figures are finished with a floor wax called mansion polish. The Joseph figure measures 20 inches tall.
The Holy Family is joined by an exotic giraffe that was also crafted in Ghana. The giraffe is carved from wood and stained black, then covered with exquisite beadwork. Cowrie shells run down the front and back of the neck. The giraffe measures 32 inches tall.
