OUR COLLECTION — LATIN AMERICA — HONDURAS 297. CLAY HOLY FAMILY
This clay Holy Family is made by Hilda in Trujillo, Honduras. The piece contains Joseph with Mary holding baby Jesus standing in a stable with star overhead. The stable measures 3.25 inches tall. The piece is too heavy to hang on a tree as an ornament, so we call it a window hanging.
The piece is very fragile because Hilda bakes them in her mud oven while she cooks tortillas and rice for her family’s dinner so she doesn’t use too much wood for the fire. The clay lacks the durability of clay that is fired in a kiln.
Hilda lives in a very isolated rural community in eastern Honduras. She is a hard worker who has no other way of making a living in Honduras besides selling crafts. She has 5 children. Her family lives in a dirt hut with thatched roof, with no electricity or plumbing. These are people who have no expendable income, so they can’t fathom how others spend their money or where it comes from.
