OUR COLLECTION — LATIN AMERICA — HONDURAS 333. WOOD NATIVITY PUZZLE
This Nativity scene is a puzzle carved from a single block of pine wood with a mahogany border. The puzzle was made by a man named Alexis Chacon in Trujillo, Honduras. The puzzle pieces come out to make a standing Nativity with the frame as the stable. The design is intricate and difficult to cut perfectly, so Ale spent over a year working on the technique. The puzzle measures 6 inches tall by 9 inches wide.
Alexis is the oldest male in a family of twelve brothers and sisters. He grew up in a one-room mud and straw hut with a tin roof. Alexis was involved in a terrible accident in 2004 when he was hit by a pickup truck while he was riding his bike. He was unconscious for weeks, and then didn’t remember anyone and couldn’t walk. But his companion Maria Ramirez stood by him, nursing him back to health. One year later he regained full health. He and Maria now have three children.
