OUR COLLECTION — LATIN AMERICA — HONDURAS 409. CALABASH HOLY FAMILY PICTURE
This picture is a stylized representation of the Holy Family. The bodies are cut from pieces of calabash gourds, and the heads are wound wire. The frames are mahogany wood. The frame measures 8 inches tall by 6 inches wide. The frame has a cutout on the back so that it can be hung with a nail on a wall.
The picture was crafted by a group of young men in the village of Guadalupe Carney, Honduras. These youth only have school for half the day, so they have extra time to learn skills useful for earning income. While many local villages have gang problems because young men have too much idle time, Guadalupe Carney is trying to prevent that problem before it happens by setting up a woodworking shop with classes for the young men in learning to use all the machines in the shop. The tools in the shop were donated by World Nativity.
