OUR COLLECTION — LATIN AMERICA — HONDURAS 494. CALABASH NATIVITY
This Nativity is made from a calabash gourd that has been cut in half. The Holy Family design is etched onto the face of the gourd. It was made by a man named Alexis Chacon in Trujillo, Honduras. The gourd measures 5 inches tall.
Alexis is the oldest male in a family of twelve brothers and sisters. He grew up in a one-room mud and straw hut with a tin roof. Alexis was involved in a terrible accident in 2004 when he was hit by a pickup truck while he was riding his bike. He was unconscious for weeks, and then didn’t remember anyone and couldn’t walk. But his companion Maria Ramirez stood by him, nursing him back to health. One year later he regained full health. He and Maria now have three children.
