This Nativity wall hanging was hand-carved and -painted by artisans in Sukodono (Japara region), Indonesia. The hanging depicts the culture of the Asmat people who live in the province of Irian Jaya. The Asmats were largely unknown to the rest of the world until the mid-twentieth century. Many have accepted Christianity, but blend it with their ancestor worship and animist beliefs.
The scene includes the Holy Family in the center, three shepherds with animals on the right, and three wise men with gifts on the left. The item measures 25.5 inches long by 7.75 inches tall.
