OUR COLLECTION — ASIA — JORDAN 565. REFUGEE NATIVITY WITH WISE MEN
These Nativity dolls are handmade of wire frames, then finished with embroidered stocking faces and traditional Palestinian costumes. This set was made by women in a refugee camp in Jericho, Jordan. The set contains 11 figures: Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus in a wicker basket, three shepherds, a donkey, a lamb, and three wise men. Joseph measures 7.5 inches tall.

In the early 1970s, a woman named Tania Tamari Nasir volunteered as an aid for refugee women in the YWCA. She schooled them in crafts and embroidery to help them make a living. They made embroidered goods, costumes of their country, and Nativity sets to sell to the public. She wrote about her experiences in My Silk Road: a Memoir.
