OUR COLLECTION — AFRICA — KENYA 127. DIAMOND MOTHER AND CHILD
This Mother and Child statue is hand-carved from kisii stone in Kenya. Diamond-shaped patterns are cut into the black painted surface, revealing the white stone underneath. This statue is 4 inches tall by 3 inches wide. The figure is joined by two elephants.
The Machakos District Cooperative was established in 1964 mainly to handle marketing for the coffee producers in the Machakos area, a hilly region about 75 kilometers southeast of Nairobi. It has since expanded and now represents a variety of “cooperative societies” which produce agricultural products (cotton, dairy products, corn, fresh fruits and vegetables, honey) and handcrafts. Handcrafts are made using local materials—sisal, soapstone, and wood. Men from the Akamba tribe supplement their meager incomes from agriculture with woodcarving and the Akamba women are skilled sisal basket weavers.
