OUR COLLECTION — AFRICA — KENYA 17. BANANA FIBER NATIVITY WITH BAOBAB TREES
This Nativity, made from banana bark that is wrapped around wire frames, captures the folk art of East Africa. Kikuyu craftsmen in Kenya have been using banana bark for hundreds of years to create small decorative items and trade goods. The set includes 14-pieces: the Holy Family, a shepherd with two goats, a warthog, three wise men, an angel, an elephant, and two Baobab trees. The angel measures 6.75 inches tall.
The two Baobab trees made from banana leaves are a great tree to include with a Nativity scene because this tree has been known to live up to 3000 years (so there are Baobab trees alive today that were alive when Jesus lived). The Baobab tree is also known as the Spirit of Life Tree in Africa. In this set, one tree has lions walking around it. The lions’ manes are made from the sisal plant. The trees are approximately 6.75 inches tall.
