OUR COLLECTION — ASIA — LAOS 218. WOOD AND STRAW NATIVITY
This Nativity scene features a traditional Laotian home for the stable. The home is set high off the ground on a platform of wood stilts. The roof is straw and the back and side wall are woven wicker. A woven straw crib for baby Jesus swings from the rafters. The home was created by Mon Sipasert and her family from Laos.
Another Laotian family from the village of Nakhoun Noy, near the capital, Vientiane, has carved the wood figures of the Nativity. The 12 figures include the Holy Family, an angel with wings, a kneeling shepherd, three wise men, and four unique animals: an ox, a pig, a warthog, and an elephant. The standing figures measure 5.5 inches tall. The large stable measures 15 inches long by 10 inches deep by 13 inches high.
