NATIVITIES FOR SALE — AFRICA — MALAWI THOMAS'S NATIVITY
This large Nativity is hand-carved from a beautiful hard wood called Muwanga wood. The scene is carved by Thomas Kacheza in central Malawi. The carving depicts many unique people and objects. From left: the man with feathers from the Ngoni tribe brings a gift of oil; this tribe is found in the central province of Malawi. The man next to him represents the people from the western part of Malawi; he brings a container holding precious stones and other special treasures. The next villager brings a special chair as a gift for baby Jesus. The next man is a shepherd carrying a chicken as a gift. On the right, the two men bending over are shepherds presenting a gift of a sheep. The heavy carving measures 20 inches across by 12 inches tall by 3 inches deep.
At a very young age, Thomas lost his both parents. After a long time of dire poverty, Thomas was introduced in the 1980s to a Catholic priest who was teaching woodcarving skills to anyone who was interested. Thomas developed his woodcarving skills and has since made this artwork his full-time vocation.
