OUR COLLECTION — ASIA — MONGOLIA 73. BADRAKH'S CHUNKY WOOD NATIVITY
We commissioned this set from our Mongolian friend Badrakh. Mongolians do not use last names. Badrakh is a Christian in Mongolia. He carved his name on the side of Jesus' manger (Mongolians use the Russian Cyrillic alphabet).
The set contains Joseph, Mary, and Jesus in the center. Jesus lies in his manger bundled up to protect him from the fierce Mongolian cold. The carver's name shows on the side of the manger. To the left of the Holy Family are two shepherds with a little lamb's head peaking out under their left arms. In front of the two shepherds are two sheep. To the right are two wise men riding yaks and one standing wise man in front of a camel.
The pieces in this set are simple and chunky with a rustic feel. The wood is pine that has been stained darkish brown. Most standing figures are 4 inches tall. The two wise men riding yaks are 6.5 inches tall.
