This Holy Family is handmade and painted by Dorjkhorol, who is a professional dollmaker in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Dorjkhorol, age 60, is a single woman who cares for her elderly mother and her grown son. During the communist regime in Mongolia, she was allowed to attend university, but the only major offered to her was dollmaking. She graduated in this trade and then the university major was discontinued after her graduation. She has been making sculptures from clay and paperboard for 40 years.
The Holy Family is made using painted clay faces and hands that are affixed to a paperboard body. The clothing is silk with other decorative fabrics and faux fur. The figures are dressed in the clothing style of 13th Century Great Mongol Empire. Joseph measures 7 inches tall.
