OUR COLLECTION — LATIN AMERICA — PANAMA 537. TINY SOAPSTONE NATIVITY
This Nativity is hand-carved from Panamanian soapstone, a volcanic rock largely composed of mineral talc and rich in magnesium. Soapstone carvings are found in two areas of Panama: in Boquete and in El Valle de Anton (where this set was purchased), located in the floor of an extinct volcano crater.
The set is composed of nine pieces: Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, the star, a cow, a donkey, and three wise men. The height of the star is 2 inches tall, while the height of the other figures is approximately 1.25 inches tall.
The artist showed pride in his country by carving the word “Panama” on the front of the star in tiny letters.
