OUR COLLECTION — LATIN AMERICA — PERU 213. POLKA DOT HOLY FAMILY
This Holy Family scene is handmade of earthen clay and then hand-painted. The set consists of Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, a cow, and a donkey. Their hair is braided cotton yarn. This set was a gift from a client in Spain; she thought it was made in Jamaica, but it is actually from Peru. The figures were made by Ruben Loayza from Ayacucho, Peru. He sells his unpainted ceramic figures to others for finishing, so perhaps this set was painted in Jamaica. The standing figures measure 5 inches tall.
In addition to portraying their own culture, Peruvian artisans also create Nativity scenes depicting other cultures worldwide.
