OUR COLLECTION — ASIA — PHILIPPINES 276. LUKMOY NATIVITY
This Nativity scene is handcrafted of lukmoy vines and wood by family-based producer group Alcala Arts & Crafts in Daet, Philippines. The set contains a stable and six figures: Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus, and three wise men. Jesus’s bed is covered with tiny dried ferns. The floor of the stable is also covered with tiny dried ferns. The stable measures 8 inches tall (to top of star) by 13 inches wide. The tallest standing figure measures 4 inches tall.
From the forests of the Philippines, the abundant and renewable lukmoy vine has been harvested and woven into baskets of all shapes and sizes for generations. This vine has now inspired a new design for an artful Nativity from a family-based workshop in Daet, Camarines Norte, a province in the eastern Philippines. These artisans have a long history of handcrafting. By working with fair trade partners, they are able to earn enough to provide for the daily needs of their families.
