OUR COLLECTION — ASIA — PHILIPPINES 486. PURPLE ABACA NATIVITY
This Nativity from the Philippines is made from abaca fiber and sinamay. Some of the natural fiber has been died purple, teal green, and dark blue with gold thread accents. The set includes Mary holding Jesus, Joseph, an angel, three kings, and two sheep. The standing figures are 5 inches tall.
Sinamay is a natural woven fiber made from the stripped fiber of the abaca tree. The fine strands of fiber are woven into fabrics with a wooden weaving loom. The woven fabric is called sinamay. These fibers are also used for making cordage and ropes.
Community Crafts Association of the Philippines (CCAP) was established in 1973. CCAP is a nonprofit organization engaged in the export marketing of handicrafts as a social development intervention. CCAP links small handicraft artisans with fair trade organizations and has recently been facilitating their entry into the mainstream market. Apart from marketing assistance, CCAP provides support to strengthen artisans’ associations, facilitates capability-building and awareness-raising on relevant issues (e.g., sustainable resource use, gender-sensitive development) and engages the artisans in product development. CCAP has helped generate employment for thousands of marginal artisans in rural and urban Philippines for more than 25 years.
