OUR COLLECTION — LATIN AMERICA — ST. VINCENT 512. TROPICAL HOLY FAMILY
This tropical Holy Family was made by Ossie Fisher on the island of St. Vincent, the largest island of the Caribbean nation called St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The figures are sewn from local cloth. The set includes Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus on a tropical wood manger, a sheep, and a chicken. Joseph stands 7.25 inches tall.
Ossie is the youngest child of her mother’s eight children and her father’s 24 children. When she was eight, she was abandoned and learned to survive without parents. She lived with many different people and sometimes on the streets. Before her mother abandoned her, she taught Ossie to sew by hand, wash clothes in the river, and scrub floors with lemon water. Ossie started sewing at age five. To “slice” fabric, she would use a knife sharpened on a wet river stone.
Ossie has five children. She is teaching her three daughters to sew and allowing them to earn a small wage. They are thrilled with this first-time opportunity. Sewing is Ossie’s only means of supporting her family. A few years ago, Ossie made costumes for the movie Pirates of the Caribbean. She was able to make a dress for herself from fabric left over from the movie’s wardrobe.
