OUR COLLECTION — AFRICA — TANZANIA 260. MAASAI SKELETON HOLY FAMILY
This Maasai Holy Family was carved from saligna gum (Eucalyptus saligna) from commercial forests in Tanzania. This is a deciduous and renewable wood that does not further harm the decimated ebony forests. The figures are blackened with polish or paint to give the wood a faux ebony appearance. The hand-carved figures wear hand-printed skirts and silver armbands. The tallest figure measures 8 inches tall.
The Maasai (or Masai) are an African people inhabiting the highlands of Kenya and Tanzania. They have a largely pastoral economy and a society based on the patrilineal clan.
