OUR COLLECTION — AFRICA — TOGO  558. AFRICAN MADONNA AND CHILD

Picture
This Madonna and Child is hand-carved from valuable ebony wood. The scene depicts an African Madonna holding baby Jesus in her arms. The carving was designed to be a wall hanging. The piece measures 11 inches tall.

The sculptor’s name is Prosper. He lives in a village called Amakpapé, which is 80 kilometers north of Lomé, the capital of Togo. Prosper carves wood in his workshop and then sells his pieces in a local craft market. Togo is one of the smallest countries in Africa, with French as its official language.
