OUR COLLECTION — AFRICA — GHANA 262. NATURAL TWENEBOA NATIVITY
This Nativity set was carved from tweneboa wood by artisan John Tse in Accra, Ghana. This wood is the most popular variety used for drums, masks, and carved figurines in Ghana because of its plentiful supply and beautiful wood-grain patterns. Tweneboa (literally translated as “drum wood”) can vary from light to medium-dark brown. This set is unstained, showing the natural grain of this wood.
The set features 14 figures: the Holy Family, an angel, a hut with carved thatched roof, a shepherd, two sheep, an ox, a pig, a camel, and three wise men with gifts. The figures have elongated faces similar to the African masks carved in Ghana. The hut measures 9 inches tall, while the wise men measure 6.75 inches tall.
All profits from our sale of John Tse’s Nativity sets go to a nonprofit charity called Africa Heartwood Project. Their website is www.africaheartwoodproject.org. This charity will use 100% of donated funds for execution of humanitarian projects in Ghana, including:
