OUR COLLECTION — LATIN AMERICA — HONDURAS 296. NATIVITY WITH CATTLE
This clay Nativity is made by Hilda in Trujillo, Honduras. The set contains Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus lying in his manger, and some cattle. Joseph measures 3.25 inches tall. We ordered a shipment of these fragile pieces and were sad that most of them arrived broken. The pieces are very fragile because Hilda bakes them in her mud oven while she cooks tortillas and rice for her family’s dinner so that she doesn’t use too much wood for the fire. The clay lacks the durability of clay that is fired in a kiln. The set originally had two cattle, but we salvaged four damaged cattle from other broken sets to make six.
Hilda lives in a very isolated rural community in eastern Honduras. She is a hard worker who has no other way of making a living in Honduras besides selling crafts. She has 5 children. Her family lives in a dirt hut with thatched roof, with no electricity or plumbing. These are people who have no expendable income, so they can’t fathom how others spend their money or where it comes from.
